Solemn event dedicated to Independence Day underway at Freedom Square

President Mikheil Kavelashvili, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili, the Cabinet of Ministers and Members of Parliament are attending the May 26 event. The event is also attended by the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Shio III, and other clergy. In addition, representatives of the diplomatic corps are present at the event, including the EU Ambassador to Georgia Pawel Herczynski A festive event dedicated to Independence Day is underway at Freedom Square.

Today, conscripts will take the military oath, after which they will join the defense forces. The conscripts' oath-taking ceremony will take place in 12 historical places in Georgia, in addition to Tbilisi.

Military equipment is deployed at Freedom Square.

According to General Grigol Chelidze, military equipment and weapons are exhibited in 21 cities across Georgia.

“I congratulate everyone on the Independence Day - today, recruits will take the oath in 13 cities across Georgia, including Freedom Square. Military equipment and weapons will also be exhibited in 21 cities, including Tbilisi. The population will have the opportunity to view the equipment throughout the day, take pictures, get acquainted with the weapons and equipment, and learn about their data. This day is a special day for the defense forces. It is closest to us and we are always happy to spend this day together with the entire Georgia and the population,” said General Grigol Chelidze.

Georgia celebrates Independence Day every year on May 26. On May 26, 1918, the National Council of Georgia adopted the “Act of Independence” in Tbilisi. This ended the 117-year period of being part of the Russian Empire, which began with the annexation of 1801 and the creation of the Democratic Republic of Georgia.
