Parent of a child with Duchenne muscular dystrophy: We have decided to start with two medicines - the children have won; from today we begin working with pharmaceutical companies and our protest is ending

“We have decided that they will start with two medicines — the children have won. From today, work with pharmaceutical companies begins, and our protest is ending,” said the mother of a child with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Tako Gogaladze, after meeting with Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.

According to her, the rally in front of the Government Administration will end and the process will now move into a working phase.

“This is a victory — the children have won, because a decision has already been made. Work on specific medicines starts today. Within 1.5–2 months, the medicines will be in Georgia, and children will begin receiving treatment. The important thing is that the issue of Duchenne muscular dystrophy has been resolved in our country. Steps have already been taken. From today, work begins, a working group will be created that will include us as parents as well. We will participate in every stage and every meeting.

It will start with two medicines, but that does not mean the process is finished. More time is needed for the remaining medicines. Work continues; it is not over. But in the first stage, for the fastest possible solution and to urgently begin treatment for children, the decision was made to start with two medicines. This is a victory — the children have won. From today, work begins with pharmaceutical companies. Our protest will end today. There will no longer be a rally near the Government Administration, and we are moving into a working process,” Gogaladze said.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a rare genetic disease that causes progressive muscle degeneration and weakness, primarily affecting children.
