“I am very pleased that today we all watched this extraordinary film, which is both very interesting and emotional. This film demonstrates, through a concrete example, the mental and value-based transformation that our country has undergone in recent years,” said Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze at the presentation of Bacho Odisharia’s documentary “Unlimited Possibilities.”
According to the head of government, the statistics shown in the film directly reflect the attitude that existed toward parasport in the past and what it is today.
“Before 2012, there were only 3 parasport athletes across the entire country in just 2 sports disciplines. Throughout the country’s history, we had only one international medal. Since then, we have taken a completely different approach to parasport. This is reflected in the statistics: today there are over 300 athletes in 14 sports, and we have dozens of world and European champions, which is a clear expression of our country’s success.
Only last year we won about 100 international medals, and of course our team’s performance at the Paris Paralympic Games was historic, where for the first time we achieved our highest result and won 9 Paralympic medals. This was a unique achievement. We also won medals in every discipline in which our Paralympic team had qualification,” Irakli Kobakhidze said.
The Prime Minister assessed that the main contribution belongs to the parasport athletes themselves - their talent, dedication, and hard work - although government support is also very important.
“We can once again promise that the Government of Georgia will continue to fully support the development of parasport and parasport athletes. We should not be satisfied with the results achieved so far; we need more and more success in Georgian parasport,” he said.
The Prime Minister also noted that, through a government decision and legislative reform, the Paralympic movement has been brought to equal status with the Olympic movement, and stipends and bonuses for para-athletes, their coaches, and doctors have been fully aligned with those of Olympians.
“We are pleased that this step was properly assessed by the International Paralympic Committee. We now have a very important goal ahead - the 2028 Los Angeles Games, where we all want to further improve our results, and I am confident that this will be another historic step forward. I wish you all great success.
I would like to thank the authors of the film - Bacho Odisharia for this excellent work, producer Giorgi Grdzelishvili, and the entire team. I also want to thank the ‘Cartu’ Foundation and personally Mr. Bidzina Ivanishvili, not only for supporting this film. As was also noted in the film, it was under his initiative that special care for the development of parasport and for improving the rights of persons with disabilities began in Georgia, and this film is another expression of that support. Once again, I thank Mr. Bidzina Ivanishvili and the ‘Cartu’ Foundation.
The film also highlighted the strong unity among parasport athletes, where the President of the Paralympic Committee plays a very important role, and this was also acknowledged. It is very important that parasport athletes support one another in this way, and together support our country and our state. Thank you for raising our flag to the highest level and making our anthem heard. I wish you even more success in the future,” the Prime Minister concluded.
