“Preparations are beginning for the withdrawal of Georgia’s application for membership in the European Union. The formal application for EU membership is expected to be revoked in the near future — this is Russia’s next objective. Step by step, Georgian Dream’s propaganda is moving toward this goal.”
This is how Salome Samadashvili, one of the leaders of Lelo for Strong Georgia, responded on social media to a post by Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili, in which he argued that “Brussels’ idea of creating a legal segregation among countries radically changes the EU’s founding principle and transforms it from a union of equal nations into a union of ‘first-class’ and ‘second-class’ nations.”
According to Samadashvili, if in 2024 the Georgian people were misled with the slogan “Towards Europe with Dignity,” Russia now expects the ruling party to remain in power under the slogan “Away from an Undignified Europe.”
“Preparations are beginning for the withdrawal of Georgia’s application for EU membership.
Today, the European Union is discussing various models for Ukraine’s accession. The goal is to ensure that accession takes place quickly. Nothing has been agreed upon yet, but a new strategy of ‘associate membership’ at the initial stage is also being considered. For both political and legal reasons, this idea faces significant opposition. It is doubtful how feasible it is to invent something entirely new outside the existing accession processes, although this discussion is currently an active topic in Brussels.
Georgian Dream has decided to use this debate for its own propaganda purposes.
It is obvious that if in 2024 they deceived the Georgian people with the slogan ‘Towards Europe with Dignity,’ Russia now expects them to stay in power under the slogan ‘Away from an Undignified Europe.’
Georgia’s formal application for membership in the European Union is expected to be withdrawn in the near future - this is Russia’s next objective. Georgian Dream’s propaganda is moving toward this goal step by step,” Samadashvili wrote.
For context, Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili was responding in a Facebook post to remarks by European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, according to whom veto rights for new EU member states could be restricted.
Papuashvili argued that Brussels’ idea of creating a legal distinction between member states would fundamentally alter the EU’s founding principles, transforming it from a union of equal nations into one divided between “first-class” and “second-class” members.
He further stated that the EU’s slogan “United in Diversity” is increasingly being replaced in practice by the motto “Do Not Deviate from the General Line,” meaning that countries will only be accepted into the club if their voice serves merely a decorative function.
