“The Public Defender handed over his mandate to Georgian Dream MPs today. Instead of Ioseliani, Gorduladze was answering the questions we asked and defending the Public Defender,” wrote Vika Pilpani, a member of the Political Council and MP of the party For Georgia, on social media.
According to Pilpani, the Public Defender is unable to identify those responsible for the deterioration of the human rights situation in Georgia.
“The Public Defender handed over his mandate to Georgian Dream MPs today. Instead of Ioseliani, Gorduladze was answering our questions and defending the Public Defender.
The Public Defender is unable to name a person responsible for the worsening human rights situation.
Today, the Public Defender cannot even defend himself,” Pilpani wrote.
As a reminder, the Human Rights Protection and Civil Integration Committee is currently hearing the Public Defender’s 2025 report, which concerns the state of human rights and freedoms in Georgia.
During the presentation, Public Defender Levan Ioseliani focused on allegations of ill-treatment of citizens detained during protests and on conditions in penitentiary institutions. He also stated that sanctions imposed for offenses related to freedom of assembly are disproportionate.
