According to Berdia Sichinava, one of the leaders of the “Gakharia for Georgia” party, the government should reconsider its decision regarding the Chorchana case if it still possesses “a grain of rationality and patriotism.”
In a social media post, Sichinava commented on the ongoing political developments in Georgia’s occupied Tskhinvali region and noted that the situation there is particularly severe in terms of annexation.
According to him, a process is underway in which Russia is “seizing and formalizing” Georgia’s historic territories, and he argues that the situation in the occupied Tskhinvali region is especially alarming.
“We are witnessing the process of Russia seizing our historic region and formalizing it as its own territory. In terms of annexation, the situation in the occupied Tskhinvali region is far worse than in occupied Abkhazia.
An unimaginable violation of Georgia’s national interests is taking place through the criminal prosecution of Giorgi Gakharia in connection with the Chorchana case. He is being judged using the rhetoric and claims of the Tskhinvali occupation regime for establishing a Georgian police checkpoint on Georgian land, within territory controlled by Georgia.
I would not wish any government to be caught beneath the political ruins of this historic case. Nor do I believe that anyone who understands the historical significance of this issue and has even the slightest love for this country would want that.
Therefore, Georgian Dream should think about withdrawing this case if it still has some grain of rationality and patriotism left,” Sichinava wrote.
