We are not imposing any bilateral sanctions on Iran—that would be absurd and wrong; we are acting in accordance with the established sanctions regime, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated in response to a question regarding the suspension of flights of Iranian airlines.
As the head of government noted, Georgia is acting in accordance with the implemented sanctions regime.
"As you know, we take sanction regimes into account. Relevant sanctions had been activated, and given that Georgia always respects sanction regimes imposed by specific institutions and states against various countries, we too made the appropriate decision—a matter on which the Ministry of Economy has issued a statement. We adhere to the sanction regime. We act in accordance with the established sanction regime. We are not imposing any bilateral sanctions on Iran; that would be absurd and incorrect. We are acting in compliance with the established sanction regime," stated Irakli Kobakhidze.
For context, the US decided to impose sanctions on 27 Iranian airlines, some of which operate flights between Georgia and Iran. Subsequently, the Georgian Civil Aviation Agency responded to the US decision, noting that "the Georgian side, as in other instances, will act in full compliance with the international sanctions regime."
