“Perhaps Irakli Garibashvili has had many questions arise while being in a penitentiary facility. He has time to think about many things and to write his political memoirs and reflect on his life - that is perfectly fine. But the main question that needs to be answered is: where did the enormous, unexplained wealth in his household come from?” - Levan Makhashvili, Chair of the Parliament’s European Integration Committee, said while commenting on another letter from former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, who is currently imprisoned.
According to him, until questions concerning Irakli Garibashvili’s wealth are answered, everything else amounts to an attempt to evade justice and avoid answering the questions.
“His letters may be interesting as political memoirs, but the main questions still remain unanswered. No matter how much he tries to shift attention elsewhere, boast about various things, and attribute everything to his political activities, that is for him to decide, and society can judge whether it is right or truthful.
The main question that remains unanswered, and which I hope will be addressed in his subsequent letters, is where all the unexplained wealth in his household came from. Until these questions are answered, everything else is unserious. These letters may be interesting to historians or as his own political memoirs, but the main questions being asked by society remain unanswered,” Makhashvili said.
For reference, former Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has published another letter on social media discussing the circumstances under which he returned to the position of prime minister in 2021. In particular, the former prime minister writes about his tenure from 2021 to 2024, recalling the economic and political results achieved during his time in office and asking the public whether the situation in the country improved or deteriorated after his departure. In his lengthy statement, the former prime minister focuses on the crisis that followed Giorgi Gakharia’s resignation, double-digit economic growth, foreign-policy achievements, and Georgia obtaining EU candidate status. He also said of former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia that he had committed “betrayal.”
