"When Kallas states that her objective is not to engage in an in-depth discussion of issues concerning Georgia and the Black Sea, it reveals her superficiality. As for the failure to invite Georgia [to the EU enlargement forum], this clearly shows who—within the context of Georgia-EU relations—is focused on boycotts, acts destructively, and obstructs dialogue," stated the Speaker of the Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili.
He further remarked that there is no major state today that treats the European Union as a significant global power.
"When Kallas states that her task does not include an in-depth discussion of issues concerning Georgia and the Black Sea, it reveals her superficiality. She avoids delving into these depths precisely because her approach to foreign policy is superficial. This is evident, and it is precisely why the European Union’s foreign policy is currently immature and has lost its global role. There is no major state today that regards the European Union as a significant global power.
As for the failure to invite Georgia [to the EU enlargement forum], this further illustrates who—within the relationship between Georgia and the EU—is focused on boycotts, acts destructively, and hinders dialogue. It is clear that, in this relationship, it is the European Union that acts destructively, while Georgia remains constructive.
We are prepared to wait for them at the negotiating table. By opting for confrontation, the European Union has not only suffered losses itself but has also led other nations to commit even greater errors, plunging them into serious trouble. We do not believe we should follow the European Union’s confrontational policy. We are seated at the negotiating table, waiting for representatives from Brussels to join us. It is time for the European Union to return to a constructive track," Papuashvili noted.
Furthermore, Papuashvili responded to a question regarding his assessment of the fact that, for the enlargement conference scheduled for November—an event where states are represented to discuss enlargement—only Nino Lomjaria has been invited from Georgia.
"In the 2024 Georgian elections, Nino Lomjaria served as an instrument for a hybrid attack and interference by Brussels. She was funded by various European foundations to facilitate external interference in the elections. She disseminated disinformation regarding the elections and, in her capacity as Public Defender, spread falsehoods concerning Saakashvili’s health. Nino Lomjaria was a tool in a hybrid attack against Georgia, and it seems they are now summoning this 'tool' once again to prepare it for further use... This highlights the immature policy of Brussels—their behavior is truly childish. Whether it is Brussels itself or the EU Ambassador, the way they act is baffling; sometimes I can hardly believe what I am witnessing. Do these people actually aspire to be global players? This is precisely why they have been sidelined from serious international discussions. They are practically begging to be included in negotiations regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, yet neither Russia nor the United States has any interest in their participation. It is this very immaturity that has brought their current predicament upon them," Papuashvili remarked.
For reference, Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, told journalists ahead of the European Council summit that she does not expect in-depth discussions on Georgia or the Black Sea region to take place during the summit, though these topics will likely be raised in the context of security.
Furthermore, according to a list released by the European Commission, the Georgian government will not be represented at the EU Enlargement Forum.
