President: I am surprised by the use of my name by the ruling party relating to pardon without my consent

According to President Salome Zourabichvili, she is surprised by the use of her name by the ruling party relating to pardon without her consent.

As Zourabichvili explained, Giorgi Rurua does not fit into any category of pardon, however, she is ready to put the country above her own principles.

"I am surprised by the statement made today by the ruling party, which uses my name relating to specific topic of pardon without my permission or consent. I make decisions, especially relating to similar matters, regardless of the expected criticism or praise, and only if I deem it necessary.

I think I have already proved this with my actions. I would like to remind everyone of one simple rule that the power of pardon is the discretion of the President and not the subject of negotiations. I also want to make it clear that the decision to pardon, as I have repeatedly said, is not subject to any pressure, instructions or demands, be it from the opposition, or from the ruling party, or from anyone else. The President shall not speak in advance about the pardon and shall not disclose the motivation. However, due to the created situation, I am forced to violate this principle and clearly express my position in order to put an end to speculations. I think no one would be surprised if I say that for me, as well as for the whole society, the person with his well-known past, who can be called many things except a political prisoner, does not fit into any category of pardon by no means, be it moral or political.

Nevertheless, as I once said, I still believe that when it comes to pulling the country out of the political stalemate, its stability, progress and future, it is the duty of the President to put the country above his/her own views and principles," Zourabichvili said.
