Former GD MPs: The special efforts of the US embassy are directed against the law enforcement structures and the rule of law of Georgia

The baseless attack of the US embassy on the law on secret investigative activities is not accidental - the special efforts of the embassy are directed against the law enforcement structures and the rule of law of Georgia, reads the statement of 4 MPs, who have left the Georgian Dream, which they released in response to the statement issued earlier by the Us embassy.

As the MPs point out, discrediting campaigns against the Prosecutor's Office and the court have been carried out for years by the embassy-sponsored NGOs.

"We would like to respond to the statement of the American Embassy on the law related to secret investigative actions. As it is known, the embassy stated that the said law does not comply with European standards and the Parliament adopted it in order to control the citizens of Georgia. Everyone who knows the law adopted by the Parliament of Georgia and the international practice even superficially understands that the law is in full compliance with European standards and it has nothing to do with the desire to control citizens. This is the reason why neither the President nor the Venice Commission could present even a single legal note on the law. Under such conditions, it is obvious that the embassy is deliberately spreading disinformation, which the radical opposition is using to artificially deepen polarization. However, this is not the main thing here. The embassy's baseless attack on the law on secret investigation actions is not accidental. It is clear that the embassy's special efforts have been directed against Georgia's law enforcement structures and the rule of law during the past few years. The expression of this was constant attacks on the court and the prosecutor's office, completely baseless criticism of the amendments made to the Code of Administrative Offenses, insistence on the release of Ugulava, Melia, Rurua and other criminals, etc.

The special operations organized by Giorgi Gakharia, which were aimed at artificially presenting the weakness of the police and damaging its image, were a particularly serious manifestation of the attempt to disrupt the law enforcement structures in Georgia. Gakharia's intrusion into Basiani was met with serious criticism in the team, especially by Kakha Kaladze. What we initially thought was a mistake turned out to be a completely deliberate crime. It seems that the main purpose was to harm the image of the police and to create aggression towards the police among the youth, and Gakharia clearly fulfilled this task. In order to damage and degrade the image of the police, the Pankisi special operation was also carried out, where Gakharia brought in the special forces at the wrong time and gave them the wrong tasks. We all remember the worst picture with seriously injured policemen and destroyed special equipment. What we thought was a mistake turned out to be a deliberate crime in that case too, which also served to artificially portray the weakness of the police and damage its reputation. Why Gakharia ordered to fire rubber bullets at journalists requires a separate discussion. Of course, the goal here was to damage the image of the police and create aggression among the population. Finally, as it turned out, after joining the service of the foreign country, Gakharia requested the position of the Minister of Internal Affairs precisely for the purpose of damaging and disrupting the police. We observe the attempts of the embassy to damage and disrupt the court and the Prosecutor's Office practically on a permanent basis.

For years now, there has been discrediting campaigns against the Prosecutor's Office and especially against the court through the embassy-sponsored NGOs. In addition, by setting such requirements as, for example, the election of judges and the prosecutor general by a qualified majority, the embassy is openly trying to give its favorite party - the National Movement the right to veto the appointments, which would be equivalent to disrupting both structures. The main goal of weakening the rule of law and law enforcement agencies in Georgia is clear: it should be easier for criminals to organize a revolution, return to power and drag Georgia into the war. The sovereignty, security and strength of the state largely depend on the law enforcement structures. When the law enforcement structures are weakened, it becomes easier to shake the Government. That is why the Government should be uncompromising in protecting the rule of law and fighting crime, no matter how the embassy tries to develop the events in the opposite direction. The power of people equipped with truth must also protect law enforcement structures. That is why we consider it necessary to speak up and tell the public the truth about any statement or action of the embassy, which is directed against the rule of law in Georgia", reads the statement issued by the press office of the Parliament.
