The Public Defender of Georgia, Levan Ioseliani, visited Mzia Amaglobeli, the founder of "Batumelebi" and "Netgazeti", at Penitentiary Facility No. 5.
According to the Public Defender's Office, he assessed the conditions of her detention and the state of her rights protection. He also personally listened to her account regarding her arrest and possible improper treatment by the police. Additionally, they discussed the charges and the applied pre-trial detention.
"On January 21, the Public Defender of Georgia, Levan Ioseliani, visited Mzia Amaglobeli at Penitentiary Facility No. 5, assessed her detention conditions and the state of her rights protection. He personally listened to her account regarding her arrest and possible improper treatment by the police. They also discussed the charges and the pre-trial detention applied in her case.
Representatives of the Public Defender had visited Mzia Amaglobeli on the day of her arrest at the temporary detention facility and later at the penitentiary facility as well.
Mzia Amaglobeli was informed about the legal measures taken by the Public Defender and his office concerning her case, including the amicus curiae opinion submitted to the Kutaisi Court of Appeals.
The Public Defender hopes that the Kutaisi Court of Appeals will consider the circumstances outlined in the amicus curiae opinion and deliberate on the application of a proportional and well-justified preventive measure in Mzia Amaglobeli’s case, should such a measure be deemed necessary," the statement reads.
