"Even if Bidzina Ivanishvili announces new elections tomorrow, I believe we should not participate in such elections. Our goal is not just to hold new elections but to ensure fair elections that the public can trust," Akaki Bobokhidze, a leader of "European Georgia," stated on PalitraNews’ program "Day’s Newsroom."
According to him, as processes around Georgia develop rapidly, time is working against "Georgian Dream," and the "noose is tightening" around them, while the opposition must show resilience.
“The noose is tightening around ‘Georgian Dream.’ They must heed the calls of our partners; otherwise, pressure on them will continue, and sanctions will intensify. Georgia cannot remain outside the civilized world unless the entire country declares it wants to live in this reality. The current situation in Georgia is about who has more resources—‘Georgian Dream’ or the opposition. We must not engage in processes that give ‘Georgian Dream’ any basis for legitimacy. I am certain that at every meeting with U.S. representatives, ‘Georgian Dream’ is told what they need to do to start normalizing the situation. The U.S.’s main demand is to hold democratic elections. Elections must be conducted under conditions agreed upon with the opposition and society.
If Bidzina Ivanishvili says tomorrow that he’s scheduling elections, I think we should not participate in such elections. Our task is not merely to appoint new elections but to ensure fair elections that the public trusts. A few days ago, Salome Zourabichvili was in Brussels at a global security conference. No representatives of the Georgian government were invited to the event. Georgia is entirely excluded from this process. Those who, for certain reasons, prefer ‘Georgian Dream’ in power are acting against the country’s interests,” he stated.
Regarding the court cases and detentions of opposition party leaders, Bobokhidze assessed that “the entire state serves the interests of one man.”
“Recently, ‘Georgian Dream’ has passed many strange laws tailored to Bidzina Ivanishvili’s interests. They don’t even hide it and do it brazenly—the entire state serves one man’s interests. Yesterday, a new draft law was introduced, according to which, if someone incurs a financial obligation, the fine can be collected not only from that person but also from their family members. They plan to apply this in Bachiashvili’s case so Ivanishvili can recover financial losses,” he said.
Regarding other issues, including the investigation launched by the Prosecutor’s Office on the opening of a checkpoint in the village of Chorchana, Bobokhidze noted that “Georgian Dream” is not only targeting previous governments but also individuals who were once their members, which he called harmful. He stated that Ivanishvili wants to harshly punish Gakharia.
“‘Georgian Dream’ representatives are harmful. They even blame Mikheil Saakashvili for starting the August 2008 war. They are ready to accuse not only others but even former members of their government of such things. The then-Minister of Internal Affairs is accused of premeditated actions to escalate the situation. This is a harmful government. What Ivanishvili’s goal is regarding Giorgi Gakharia is significant, but they continue their harmful actions, portraying our state as an aggressor. According to their logic, Abkhazians and Ossetians were right when they didn’t want to live with a nation constantly starting conflicts. This is the line ‘Georgian Dream’ is pursuing today.
As for Gakharia directly, Ivanishvili has said he will punish him particularly harshly. Either Gakharia participates in elections, or they might force him to participate and write catastrophic results for him, and then arrest him anyway. I’m curious about one thing: if Gakharia really did what they accuse him of, shouldn’t the then-Minister of Security be imprisoned? Where was the State Security Service, which is independent of the Cabinet of Ministers? After that, Gakharia was elected as Georgia’s Prime Minister. Let me remind you of Kobakhidze’s words: ‘Every fly buzzes, but everyone lies about Gakharia.’ In other words, for him, Gakharia was unique and the most successful political figure. Today, however, Gakharia is a disgraceful figure for them,” he stated.
