“Coalition for Change” appeals to international partners with an open letter, calling for decisive steps: to impose personal sanctions on Ivanishvili, Kobakhidze and other officials, and to adopt the “MEGOBARI Act”

The Coalition for Change calls on its partners — the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States — to impose personal sanctions on Bidzina Ivanishvili, the so-called Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, and all de-facto officials; to suspend all political and financial engagement with the regime; to ensure the adoption of the MEGOBARI Act by the U.S. Senate; and to recognize Georgia’s democratic opposition, civil society and President Salome Zurabishvili as the legitimate representatives of the European will of the Georgian people. With this appeal, three political groups united under the Coalition for Change address their European partners.

According to the open letter, Georgia is facing not only an internal political crisis but also a grave moral test for the entire democratic world. Therefore, the coalition calls on Western partners to take decisive steps consistent with established democratic values and international commitments.

"Open Letter of the Pro-Western Political Alliance — “Coalition for Change” (“Akhali” / “Girchi – More Freedom” / “Droa”) — to the executive bodies and parliament of the European Union, to the governments and parliaments of EU member states, the United Kingdom, and the United States

Dear friends of Georgia,

We, the leaders of a pro-European and Euro-Atlantic integration-oriented coalition, are writing to you at a decisive moment for our country — when defenders of democracy in Georgia and the forces loyal to our shared transatlantic values are being declared “enemies of the state” by Ivanishvili’s regime.

Today, virtually every pro-Western political leader in Georgia is being accused of “sabotage” against the state. In recent days, the State Security Service, the Prosecutor’s Office and the Ministry of Internal Affairs have jointly launched criminal proceedings against almost all major political leaders and opposition figures.

Although domestically this repressive propaganda is presented as “defending sovereignty,” in reality it is an attack on Georgia’s European future. Today, when the “Georgian Dream” regime is attempting to outlaw the country’s main pro-Western political forces — “Akhali,” “United National Movement,” and “Lelo” — and when state institutions have been turned into instruments of repression in the hands of Russian oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili, Georgia stands not only before an internal political crisis but also before a grave moral test for the entire democratic world.

We call on our partners — the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States — to take decisive steps consistent with established democratic values and international obligations. The time for symbolic actions is over. What is now at stake is the credibility of freedom itself.

Therefore, we urge you to:

  • Impose personal sanctions on Bidzina Ivanishvili, the so-called Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, and all other de-facto officials responsible for political persecution, judicial manipulation and collaboration with Russia.

  • Ensure the adoption of the MEGOBARI Act by the U.S. Senate — as a strong signal of support for the pro-Western and Euro-Atlantic aspirations of the Georgian people.

  • Suspend all political and financial engagement with the regime until political prisoners are released, repression ends and constitutional order is restored.

  • Recognize Georgia’s democratic opposition, civil society and President Salome Zurabishvili as the legitimate representatives of the European will of the Georgian people.

Georgia’s place is in Europe, but Europe cannot open its doors to an autocracy governed by Russia. What is happening today in Tbilisi will have a significant impact beyond its borders tomorrow. The fate of freedom in the Black Sea region — and the moral strength of the democratic world — now depends on whether our shared principles will protect us with the firmness they deserve.

Thank you for your friendship, your solidarity and — especially — for the courage to stand beside the Georgian people in this historic moment.

With deep respect, Coalition for Change — “Akhali”, “Girchi – More Freedom”, 'Droa'".
