Trump’s letter, which is a response and gratitude and which is a matter of pure etiquette, has been portrayed as some kind of breakthrough, - one of the leaders of the Federalists, Giga Bokeria, stated on Palitrannews regarding the letter sent by US President Donald Trump to Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.

Bokeria also assessed the participation of Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili in the ministerial in Washington.

When asked what Botchorishvili’s invitation to Washington could mean and whether this could be a sign of a reset in relations, Bokeria replied that it was too early to talk about any kind of breakthrough.

“This cannot mean anything, because this is not the first time that a representative of this regime has been invited to a conference.

I have always been against this attitude of some people, when they said why they had been met or shaken hands [the Western partners of the Georgian Dream], why they had been invited somewhere… As long as this regime is in power, they will have to deal with them on the international stage. They do not have the legitimacy of a significant part of society inside the country, they also lack political legitimacy outside. This has not changed and will not change as long as this regime is the way it is.

Talking about any kind of breakthrough is, at least, premature and frivolous, given the nature of Ivanishvili’s persona. We simply see his weakness - whoever is strong for him, he tries to sort things out with him. All autocrats are like that, and this is a normal instinct of autocrats. In Ivanishvili’s case, he is naturally aligned with Russia, he is its natural ally, and now there is a paranormal situation, which he did not expect, that the balance of power is changing.

He [Ivanishvili] saw the use of force by America in our region, the weakening of Russia, and now he is trying to insure himself. However, the nature of the regime does not change.

In international relations, contacts are established and pragmatic deals are made by the free world with various types of regimes, but in the case of Georgia, we are interested in whether something will happen for Georgia's national interests, which is out of the question under this regime.

Even if the confrontation softens tomorrow on some issue, this regime is sanctioned, even under this administration, no sanctions have been lifted for anyone.

As for Donald Trump's letter, it also shows how hysterical Ivanishvili is and how much he needs all this for propaganda. But then, when this breakthrough does not happen, the slander and cursing begin again. They will again say that Trump is a hostage of the “deep state”, etc.

My prediction is that until they [Georgian Dream representatives] change this nature, they will not be able to make a substantial breakthrough,” Bokeria said.

He also spoke about the expected arrest of opposition leaders. When asked why he was not involved in the so-called sabotage case, while other opposition members have been charged, Bokeria replied that his arrest is not ruled out either.

“We were not included in the banned parties at first, and then we were included. It is not excluded that the same thing will happen here, but until this happens, I am again put in a difficult position to speculate on why the Ivanishvili regime might make any choices regarding specific individuals. The arrest of politicians is the most serious symptom, but we must tell the public that the problem is not that a certain politician is or is not arrested, but why this regime is doing it. The regime is doing it in order to maintain power and money, which exist at the expense of the future of all citizens of Georgia,” he said.

Bokeria also spoke about the plans of the Opposition Alliance and the issue of the elections. According to him, he does not understand why the issue of participation or non-participation in the elections has now been brought to the fore. Bokeria suggests that one of the reasons for this is the propaganda of the Georgian Dream, trying to show the public that there are fluctuations in the opposition.

“Our task is to achieve free elections. The whole society must achieve a turning point before the elections, otherwise we are not “boycotters” of the elections. The point is not in boycotting or not declaring a boycott, the point is in the power of society, which should be reflected in political parties. In this sense, our statement is clear - we want a turning point to occur before the elections, so that the elections have meaning. We have said what the conditions are that we consider to be the right conditions for free elections. We must achieve a turning point by talking about those issues”, he said.
