No one is persecuting Irakli Gharibashvili, nor Mikheil Saakashvili - the fact is that he has been misled, Georgian Dream MP Irakli Cheishvili stated, responding to the latest letter from the imprisoned former Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili.
According to him, any statement that Irakli Gharibashvili has made to this day is speculation.
“We do not politically persecute anyone. Any person can express their opinion. Mr. Irakli Gharibashvili stated that he has returned to politics. He will probably found a political party and continue his activities in politics, but any statement that he has made to this day is speculation. We do not persecute anyone, we do not blackmail anyone. What he is talking about is only his own imagination. It is very unfortunate that the former leader of our team, the former Prime Minister, has been misled.
In this specific case, there is no stabbing in the back from our side; he himself cooperated with the investigation and admitted guilt. He is serving his sentence in accordance with the law. The fact is that he has been misled. No one is persecuting Irakli Gharibashvili, nor Mikheil Saakashvili. Any convicted person is fairly serving their sentence,” Cheishvili stated.
For reference, Georgia’s former Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili is distributing another letter from Rustavi Prison and accuses the authorities of an “abominable and tragic” masquerade. The ex-prime minister calls the investigation launched after one of his recent letters, within the framework of which, among others, opposition politicians were questioned, unserious. Gharibashvili addresses the authorities, saying that they should “not bother in vain” with “ridiculous and helpless” methods, because just as “water and oil do not mix,” it is impossible to connect him with the “National Movement.” In the letter, Gharibashvili ironically writes about the reports related to him that he is supposedly an agent of the “deep state” and France, and notes: “I am lucky” that I do not know other foreign languages, otherwise they would probably also declare me an “agent” of other countries. In the letter, Gharibashvili again addresses his teammates, saying that he is not fighting anyone and that a knife was stabbed in their backs.
