Irakli Kadagishvili: These are not resolutions based on justice; they serve solely to satisfy narrow political interests

"These are not resolutions based on justice. These are resolutions that serve solely to satisfy narrow political interests," stated Georgian Dream MP Irakli Kadagishvili, commenting on the European Parliament resolution.

According to him, Georgia possesses a constitution and laws that fully comply with international standards, and "it is not up to individual Members of the European Parliament to decide whether or not Georgia should have laws and a constitution."

"It is regrettable—though we have become accustomed to it—to see certain political groups whose attitude toward Georgia has been known for years. They have a single goal: not to foster the democratic process in Georgia, but to bring the National Movement cluster back to power by any means and methods.

As for the issues related to the resolution, the local political opposition was emboldened and fueled by precisely this kind of policy—that sought to take the 2024 parliamentary elections to the streets; they uttered not a single word of criticism regarding that, but instead actively encouraged such actions in every possible way, including the attempted coup of October 4. Therefore, this is simply a series of resolutions—an act of revenge against Georgia, so to speak—by defeated foreign and domestic political actors; these resolutions bear no relation to reality.

As for the issue of so-called "political prisoners": if anyone who storms or attacks state institutions or police officers in Georgia is to be labeled a political prisoner, then France—which saw thousands of such individuals during recent protests—would have acquired thousands of political prisoners just a few days ago; yet, naturally, no resolution was passed, nor was a single word of criticism uttered.

Regarding the matter of political parties: I would strongly urge everyone to bear in mind that Georgia is not a country without laws. Georgia possesses a constitution and a body of laws that are in full compliance with international standards. It is not up to individual Members of the European Parliament to decide whether or not Georgia should have laws and a constitution.

Consequently, we are adhering strictly to legal and constitutional processes—including regarding those parties whose activities are the subject of objective evidence arising from our legal action.

I reiterate that these resolutions are not based on justice. These are resolutions that serve solely to satisfy narrow political interests," stated Kadagishvili.

For context, a resolution titled "The attempts of the ruling Georgian Dream party to ban opposition parties in Georgia" was adopted today at the European Parliament's plenary session by 445 votes to 37, with 97 MEPs abstaining. The draft resolution, published yesterday prior to the debate on the matter, states that the European Parliament strongly condemns attempts to ban Georgian opposition parties and demands the immediate withdrawal of the constitutional lawsuit filed against them. Furthermore, the European Parliament calls on the EU and its member states to impose sanctions on Georgian Dream Honorary Chairman Bidzina Ivanishvili, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili, and Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze.
