The MPs that have left the Georgian Dream - Sozar Subari, Mikheil Kavelashvili and Dimitri Khundadze - have issued a joint statement.

As MPs point out, they want to re-explain their views on the ongoing events.

According to the statement, setting a 6-month deadline for fulfilling the 12 points proposed by the European Council has only one logical explanation - someone wants to create an artificial commotion around this topic.

"Candidate status: First of all, we will touch upon the topic of the EU candidate status, which has been introduced in the country's agenda at this stage completely artificially. Initially, they made us apply in an expedited manner and we were rejected expeditiously, but now we have a completely unprecedented and incomprehensible deadline for the EU practice and we have been asked to fulfill the 12 points set by the European Commission in 6 months - in an expedited manner. The pressure around this deadline is further exacerbated by the statements made by ambassadors and MEPs on a daily basis, which is a completely new thing in the EU practice.

Had the date of accession to the EU been slightly dependent on the date of granting candidate status, such pressure and deadline would have had at least minimal explanation. For example, the practice of the Balkan countries shows that when a European country receives the status of a candidate country in the standard situation, it may join the EU in about 15 years. However, the cases of Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova is non-standard. Candidate status in this case is not due to the fact that these countries are substantially ready for candidate status, but there are political reasons and an expedited procedures.

As you know, the ruling team had a specific plan for EU membership, which we presented to the public 2 years ago under the election program. The Government had to ensure that at least 70 percent of the obligations under the Association Agreement would be met within the next 2 years, and based on that, by 2024, it would apply for candidate status. According to the standard practice, in such a case, Georgia would receive candidate status in about 2 years and also, according to the standard practice, in the conditions of successful development, in about 12-15 years, by 2040, it would become a member of the EU”, reads the statement.

According to the MPs, they are sure that the Government will do everything in the next 6 months to get candidate status.

“However, no one can explain, from a practical point of view, how the accelerated granting of candidate status is beneficial for Georgia. Consequently, the commotion created around this issue is obviously completely artificial.

Consequently, the 6-month deadline has only one logical explanation. Someone wants to create an artificial commotion around this topic and artificially stir up the emotions of people, in order to remove the Georgian Dream from power and replace it with the National Movement in a revolutionary scenario. This scenario was discussed in Bakuriani," reads the statement.

The joint statement also touches upon de-oligarchization and states that no one has presented and will not be able to present any evidence proving that Bidzina Ivanishvili is an oligarch.

At the end of the statement, the MPs say that their goal is for Georgia to continue its smooth movement towards Europe.

"We want to clarify once again the following - our desire and goal is for Georgia to continue to move smoothly towards Europe. That is why we will protect the country and our dignity whenever someone touches it. Response to insult is not an attack on Western partners, but our obligation to our country and its dignity. When Europeans act in a non-European manner, they harm Europe and its interests. Therefore, responding to injustice means protecting our European partner, Europe and Georgia’s European path,” reads the statement.
