Minister of Justice: It is an insult to the public when the National Movement declares its readiness to work on decreasing the number of prisoners and protecting their rights

People during whose rule, according to European assessment, torture and inhumane treatment were a systemic problem, today talk to us about people's rights, this is extreme cynicism, the Minister of Justice, Rati Bregadze, said at the plenary session of the Parliament, where he was being heard in the "Minister's Hour" format.

According to Bregadze, it is an insult to the society when the National Movement declares its readiness to decrease the number of prisoners and protect their rights.

"I cannot but touch upon the moments and incidents that took place from the side of the radical opposition, but at the same time I want to thank certain members of the opposition for critical and work-related questions. They also expressed healthy criticism, which, of course, is acceptable, no one likes too much criticism, but this is democracy. However, I must dwell on the issue of what is called the cynicism of political Januses. It is an insult to the public when the National Movement declares its readiness to work on decreasing the number of prisoners and protecting their rights. This is an extreme insult to society. They should ask at least once about their own heroic deeds, ask both the past prisoners and even the current ones who are in the penitentiary. People, during whose rule, according to the European assessment, torture and inhumane treatment were a systemic problem, today talk to us about people's rights, this is extreme cynicism", said Bregadze.

In addition, according to the Minister's assessment, the period of the National Movement being in power is a great shame in the history of Georgia, especially the "reforms" that they implemented in the penitentiary institutions.

"Also, today I reminded the political gamblers playing with the state interest of the steps taken by them against the state interest, this is a historical shame for our defense forces. The statements that these people made and the resolution that these people signed are truly a historical shame. It is an insult to our defense forces who fought till the last drop of blood. These people fought for those territories, and their leader, the former commander-in-chief, who refused Georgian citizenship, a short time ago, called these territories rocky and hilly places that have zero value, and these guys sacrificed their lives for that. Today, these people talk to us about the occupation and other issues, which are unacceptable. If you ask me, the period of these people's rule is a great shame in the history of Georgia, especially the "reforms" that they implemented in prisons and penitentiary institutions," said Bregadze.
