Shalva Papuashvili: Our task is to inform the public about the constitutional changes and the motivation why we think it is important to regulate these issues in the constitution

Our task is to introduce the changes and motivation to the public, why we think it is important to regulate these issues in the constitution, and to listen to the attitude and opinions of the population, - the Speaker of the Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, stated this at the meeting with the population of the organizing commission of the universal-people's discussion regarding the constitutional amendments.

As Shalva Papuashvili noted, recently, the parliamentary majority initiated an amendment to the constitution and a draft of a separate constitutional law on issues of family values and protection of minors.

"In general, in a democracy, in a country like Georgia, the source of power, the source of government is the people, and the people, through elections, periodically hand over a mandate to their representatives, in our case, for four years, who, already equipped with this mandate, make laws, various decisions, elect the government etc. This is called representative democracy. However, our constitution also provides that there are times when this mandate is not enough and it is necessary to go through direct consultation with the people again and form the decision. According to our constitution, it refers to the principles of community coexistence, basic values, and the basic structure of the country's organization. The issues which are the basic values, the basic principles of our coexistence are reflected in the constitution.

Therefore, when we think to specify something, to change something and specify in the main principles of coexistence, we are thinking about the amendment of the constitution," said the Chairman of the Parliament.

According to Shalva Papuashvili, the commission will hold meetings with residents in different cities of Georgia for a month, until May 17, and then submit a report to the parliament on how people see the constitutional amendment, and parliamentary discussions will begin only after that.
