We are considering the possibility of a visit to Georgia, - Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda announced this at a press conference held in Klaipeda, together with Latvian and Estonian Presidents Edgars Rinkevich and Alar Kar.
According to Gitanas Nauseda, he discussed the current situation in Georgia at the meeting with his colleagues.
"First of all, I must emphasize that the current situation in Georgia is completely different from the situation in 2008, when the Russian Federation invaded the country and occupied part of the country's territory, but the Georgian society stood together against the occupier and the aggressor. This time, we see that the Georgian society is divided into two", said Gitanas Nauseda.
According to him, he condemns the rhetoric of some Georgian officials regarding European integration.
"European integration is recorded in the Constitution of Georgia, therefore it is against the Constitution. This is incomprehensible from our point of view and that of the EU member states," said Gitanas Nauseda. The President of Lithuania condemned the violence against the peaceful demonstrators in Georgia and noted that he supports the imposition of sanctions against Georgia.
"We are considering the possibility of visiting Georgia in December, this possibility is still open and we will discuss it with the President of Poland, Andrzej Duda. I think that the more united we are regarding Georgia, the more effectively we will be able to implement EU policy. This is the reason why I support sanctions against Georgia, which can be imposed at the European level," said the President of Lithuania.
According to Gitanas Nauseda, he will raise this issue at the next meeting of the European Council.
