The Public Defender visits Mzia Amaghlobeli in a penitentiary facility

The Public Defender of Georgia, Levan Ioseliani, visited Mzia Amaghlobeli, the founder of Batumelebi and Netgazeti, at Penitentiary Facility #5.

According to the Public Defender's Office, the visit involved checking the conditions of her detention and assessing the state of her rights. Additionally, the Public Defender personally listened to Amaghlobeli's account of her arrest and the alleged mistreatment by the police. They also discussed the charges against her and the use of pretrial detention.

"On January 21, Georgia's Public Defender, Levan Ioseliani, visited Mzia Amaghlobeli at Penitentiary Facility #5, inspected the conditions of her detention, and evaluated her rights protection. He personally heard from the journalist about the circumstances of her arrest and possible improper treatment by the police. They also discussed the charges and the applied pretrial detention measures.

Representatives of the Public Defender had visited Mzia Amaghlobeli on the day of her arrest, both at the temporary detention facility and later in the penitentiary.

Amaghlobeli was informed about the legal actions taken by the Public Defender and their office regarding her case. This included the submission of an amicus curiae brief to the Kutaisi Court of Appeals.

The Public Defender hopes that the Kutaisi Court of Appeals will consider the circumstances outlined in the amicus curiae brief and will deliberate on applying proportional and justified preventive measures against Mzia Amaghlobeli, if such measures are necessary," the statement said.
