Giorgi Melashvili: The process of suspending visa liberalization is being delayed because the EU does not want to punish the Georgian people—the ball and the field are in the hands of Georgian Dream

“The ball and the field are in the hands of ‘Georgian Dream.’ They have all the levers and opportunities to ensure normal relations between the Georgian state and the West, but they are not doing so,” said Giorgi Melashvili, founder of the European-Georgian Institute, speaking about the ongoing process in Brussels regarding Georgia.

As Melashvili stated on PalitraNews’s program “Resume,” if visa liberalization is canceled, the Georgian government, along with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, will bear responsibility.

“Hungary’s attempts to block the EU’s effectiveness may be beneficial for ‘Georgian Dream’ in the short term, as specific individual sanctions will not be imposed. However, it will be much worse for the Georgian people because, due to Hungary’s obstruction, sanctions might be imposed on the entire Georgian population instead of specific individuals. Hungary and Orbán will be responsible alongside ‘Georgian Dream,’” Melashvili stated.

According to Giorgi Melashvili, the government is doing nothing to warm relations with Georgia’s partners.

“The more ‘Georgian Dream’s’ true anti-Western face and attacks on democracy—such as the suspension of visa liberalization—become evident, the more people within ‘Georgian Dream’ itself will see that it is neither a pro-Western nor a pro-democratic force. The reason this process is dragging on for so long is that the EU does not want to punish the Georgian people. Initially, they spoke to ‘Georgian Dream’ in diplomatic language, then there were closed consultations and private letters, but the government is doing nothing to warm relations with our partners in any way,” Melashvili stated.

According to Melashvili, “Georgian Dream” is attempting to create “a small Soviet remnant” in Georgia.

“‘Georgian Dream’ is characterized by shifting its own sins onto others. Let’s look at Georgia today—a one-party parliament, a judiciary under the control of one party, and no system of checks and balances among the branches of government.

What resembles the Soviet Union more? A one-party system where one person makes all the decisions, or the EU, where there are countless political parties?” Melashvili stated, adding: “They are projecting themselves onto the EU and blaming the EU for the war that ‘Georgian Dream’ itself is trying to wage in Georgia. What we’ve seen recently is an attempt to create a small Soviet remnant in the 21st century. It’s a replay of Soviet complexes,” Giorgi Melashvili stated.
