Iago Khvichia: We initiated the amnesty draft law now because there is a chance that the government will not deceive people in the election year

Some are worried that Dream may get votes by releasing prisoners, but I'm not worried, the main thing is prisoners to be released. The most obvious injustice should end - a person locked in four walls, who does not deserve it, should be released, - one of the leaders of Girchi, Iago Khvichia, said on PalitraNews regarding the initiative of Girchi and several groups of the parliamentary opposition relating to the general amnesty, which Lelo does not support.

As Khvichia noted, in the election year there is a chance that the government will not deceive people.

"I think the opposite opinion is hypocritical”, he said. “Before the elections, there is a chance that these people will not be deceived.”

According to him, it is necessary to reach a common opposition consensus on large-scale amnesty.

"This is not only Girchi's initiative, we are one of the co-authors, there are two parties that do not agree with us - Lelo and Gakharia’s party. Our task is that there is a common opposition consensus and then we will go to the Georgian Dream and there will be no room for pre-election speculations regarding this topic. There are two opposing parties - Lelo, I'm glad, they don't represent a big force, they just spoil the market”, said Khvichia.

As for the fact that Lelo does not join the said amnesty due to the reduction of sentences for drug traffickers and for crimes committed by officials, Khvichia states that "it is nonsense in content".

"We think Lelo is a hypocritical political party, which for so long had been talking to prisoners, as if they wanted amnesty, as if they were fighting for something, doing something," said Iago Khvichia.
