Friends of Georgia are demanding the release of Mzia Amaghlobeli and are calling for decisive international action to achieve this goal, as stated in a joint statement signed by European parliamentarians and other politicians, which was shared on the social media platform X by French Member of the European Parliament, Nathalie Loiseau.

“We, the friends of Georgia, demand the immediate release of journalist Mzia Amaghlobeli, 52 journalists, and the many political prisoners who are currently imprisoned as a result of the terrorist crackdown against democracy, human rights, and Georgia's Euro-Atlantic future, which has been ongoing for 69 days and has noticeably worsened recently,” the statement reads.

The European parliamentarians hold the Georgian government responsible for the consequences of the health damage to Mzia Amaghlobeli.

“As Mzia Amaghlobeli's hunger strike and unjust imprisonment have now entered the fourth week and pose a life-threatening and irreversible danger, we are alarmed by reports from the 'Georgian Young Lawyers' Association' and others that she is not receiving the necessary medical care and is being subjected to degrading treatment in captivity. We emphasize that the current Georgian government bears full responsibility for all consequences concerning her health,” the statement adds.

According to them, “the attempts of the 'Georgian Dream' leadership to distort the circumstances leading to Mzia Amaghlobeli's detention and to tarnish her professional reputation by labeling her as 'foreign-funded' are not to be believed.”

“This is another maneuver aimed at diverting attention from the mass mobilization of the Georgian population around the Euro-Atlantic path. The Euro-Atlantic path, which is enshrined not only in the country's constitution but also in the will of the people, who have been betrayed by the oligarchic party 'Georgian Dream' in its unlawful seizure of power supported by Russia. The Georgian people will not remain silent, nor will their only legitimate institution—the president, Salome Zourabichvili—independent media, and active civil society organizations, who urgently need our support. We express our solidarity with them,” the statement reads.

The politicians call on the European Union to impose sanctions on Bidzina Ivanishvili, Irakli Kobakhidze, Vakhtang Gomelauri, and Sulkhan Tamazashvili.

“We once again repeat our call for the urgent restoration of Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic path and democracy, starting with the immediate release of all political prisoners, the annulment of recent illegitimate laws restricting freedom of assembly, and the organization of new elections under independent oversight. We call again on our countries and the European Union to respond appropriately by maintaining or imposing sanctions on those responsible, including Bidzina Ivanishvili, Irakli Kobakhidze, Vakhtang Gomelauri, and Sulkhan Tamazashvili,” the parliamentarians state.

The statement is signed by: Pavel Fischer, Member of the Czech Senate; Radoslaw Fogiel, Member of the Polish Parliament; Michael Gahler, Member of the European Parliament; Gustav Gothberg, Member of the Swedish Parliament; Bernard Guetta, Member of the European Parliament; Rasa Jukneviciene, Member of the European Parliament; Ian Kelly, former Ambassador to Georgia; Gerald Knaus, Founder of the European Stability Initiative; Riho Terras, Member of the European Parliament; Juka Kopra, Member of the Finnish Parliament; David Kramer, Director of the George Bush Presidential Center; Yevgenia Kravchuk, Member of the Ukrainian Parliament; Eerik-Nils Kross, Member of the Estonian Parliament; Miapetra Kumpula-Natri, former Member of the European Parliament; Nathalie Loiseau, Member of the European Parliament; Oleksandr Merezhko, Member of the Ukrainian Parliament; Maria Mezentseva-Fedorenko, Member of the Ukrainian Parliament; Marko Mihkelson, Member of the Estonian Parliament; Inara Murniece, Member of the Latvian Parliament; Zigmantas Pavilionis, Member of the Lithuanian Parliament; Frédéric Petit, Member of the French Parliament; Lia Quartapelle, Member of the Italian Parliament; Michael Roth, Chairman of the Bundestag’s Foreign Affairs Committee; Randy Schone, President of Orion Strategies; Katarina Tolgfors, Member of the Swedish Parliament; Tom Tugendhat, Member of the UK Parliament; Sebastian Tynkkynen, Member of the European Parliament; Reinier van Lanshot, Member of the European Parliament; Viola von Cramon, former Member of the European Parliament; Michal Wawrikiewicz, Member of the European Parliament; Dainius Zalimas, Member of the European Parliament. The statement is also supported by U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson, Chairman of the Helsinki Commission.
