The German ambassador, in an attempt to justify his act of solidarity yesterday, confirmed that he did not advise Elene Khoshtaria to end her hunger strike and only went to express empathy – Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili writes this on social media.
“What exactly could the ambassador be expressing empathy, that is, compassion, for? For the hunger strike as a form of protest, or for the demand made through this form?
If he feels compassion for the form itself – that is, when a person tries to coerce others by threatening self-harm – that is a moral catastrophe. Is it moral to go to someone who has a gun pointed at their own temple and simply limit oneself to showing sympathy? This is precisely the instrumentalization of human life – presenting a life not as an end in itself but as a means to achieve an end, which is a violation of the ‘human dignity’ protected by the very first article of the German constitution.
And if the ambassador sympathizes with the content, that is, with Khoshtaria’s goal of forcing the opposition through this act to boycott the local elections, that is a diplomatic catastrophe. However, given his recent political activities, this is not surprising at all.
The prohibition imposed on diplomats by the ‘Vienna Convention’ – not to interfere in domestic affairs – primarily serves to protect them from reckless and harmful behavior to themselves,” Papuashvili writes on Facebook.
