Part of parliamentary opposition presents 7-point plan necessary for Georgia to get candidate status

Part of the parliamentary opposition will hand over to the Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili a list of steps that are necessary to be taken in order to prevent the country from failing to receive candidate status.

A part of the opposition held a briefing in the Parliament, naming 7 specific issues.

"Georgia made a European choice based on its own historical values. Today, as never before, we are close to EU integration. There are several weeks left before the decision on Georgia’s candidate status.

Missing such a unique opportunity means that Georgia's European integration will be postponed for decades. Right now, in the coming weeks, we must show the EU that Georgia is ready to take decisive steps to move closer to Europe, to carry out fundamental reforms and to take this path by taking the following steps: the Parliament should adopt a judicial package jointly drafted by the opposition; the electoral reform should be completed and constitutional amendments should be immediately adopted in the 2nd and 3rd readings; attacks on our Western partners - diplomats, MEPs and ambassadors - should be stopped; a resolution should be adopted in support of Ukraine, which will emphasize and clearly condemn the war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine; a new legislative package should be drafted by the Government to guarantee the prevention of circumvention or misinterpretation of international sanctions imposed on Russia; the issue of Nika Gvaramia should be resolved; the rights of Mikheil Saakashvili as a prisoner should be protected and high-level international medical experts should be invited, whose recommendations for treatment/rehabilitation should be mandatory," said Strategy Builder leader Giorgi Vashadze.

As Lelo MP Ana Natsvlishvili said at the same briefing, the Prime Minister was given a list of issues during his visit to Brussels, which should be resolved.

Khatia Dekanoidze, chairwoman of United National Movement, also made a statement at the briefing, noting that not only the Georgian society but also Brussels and European capitals are expecting these steps to be taken.
